Hundreds of Staten Islanders took a "down-to-earth" approach to sustainability.
The Department of Sanitation held a compost give-back Sunday at Fresh Kills Park.
Residents picked-up ten 40-pound-bags of compost for free.
About 800 people registered for the program, which has gained a large following.
Hundreds lined-up for the same event, causing a several-mile traffic jam back in May.
Residents said they had to take advantage of the free compost, which will go a long way in their outdoor gardening projects.
"To grow your own food. you don't realize how much work it is. You don't realize how costly it is until you actually get down there and do it. So, we appreciate it. We need it,” said one resident.
Where does the compost come from? The sanitation department makes the compost from food scraps and yard waste collected through its drop-off centers and curbside pick-up programs.
