RALEIGH -- The NC State Department of Labor is putting a moratorium on a fair ride that killed one person and left several others hurt at the Ohio State Fair on Wednesday evening.
Turns out that exact ride, the KMG Fire Ball, was used in the Charlotte area a few months ago.
Officials say once they saw what happened at the Ohio State Fair, they quickly decided that ride will not be coming back to North Carolina for now.
They will revisit the case once Ohio completes its investigation.
Video captured by a bystander at the Ohio fair Wednesday evening shows the Fire Ball ride swinging above its bottom platform when a crashing sound is heard. The footage then shows one section holding four riders come apart as it begins to swing upward and at least two people tumbling in the air.
Screams are heard as passengers are thrown to the ground.
Officials said the man who was killed was one of several people who were thrown to the ground when the ride malfunctioned. His name has not been released. Ohio State Medical Center said three of the injured were being treated there. Two of them were in critical condition, the hospital said Thursday.
Labor officials say that exact ride was used in the Charlotte area at a festival about two and a half months ago. It was slated to come back to the state sometime in the future. But officials say that's not going to happen for now.
They say people should still be confident in North Carolina's inspection process. It's one the toughest in the country.
"In North Carolina, the rides are inspected each time they're assembled. A lot of states don't do that. So the ride has to meet the manufacturer's specifications 100 percent. And if the ride doesn't meet the manufacturer's specifications, it's simply not certified, and it's not operating at that particular venue."
It was a few years ago when the Vortex ride was tampered with and malfunctioned at the North Carolina State Fair, injuring an entire family.
Officials say, right now, there's not going to be a change in how they inspect fair rides.
