CHARLOTTE -- One person is recovering after being struck by lightning Thursday night at a Wendy's parking lot off Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The person is expected to be okay.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, from 2006 to 2016, 352 people died from lightning strikes in the United States and, in most cases, it happened while they were outside.

Experts say whenever you hear thunder lightning is close enough to possibly strike you.

NOAA provided the following tips to stay safe from lightning:

  • Stay off your computers, phones, or anything that puts you in direct contact with electricity.
  • Avoid plumbing, including sinks, bathtubs and faucets.
  • Stay away from windows and doors and stay off of porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Stay inside at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.
