"This is the first time we crossed the bridge, and we said wooow this is a beautiful Bridge,” said Martha Gonzalez, Driver.

Drivers taking their first trip across the new span of the Goethals, weren't just happy about a smoother flow of traffic, they couldn't help but notice how it looks.

"Good design and Good looking," said another driver.

But not everyone is so enthusiastic about the new span.

Stuart Niborski commented on NY1’s Facebook page “Is it just me or is this modern style of bridge building ugly?”

Alexandra Preziosi wrote, “These new bridges are so ugly. No amount of lighting will make it look any better,”

"I like the design, looks similar to the Kosciuszko,” said Erika Reyes, referring to the Kosciuszko Bridge, she along with many others noticed the bridges similarity to several others in the region.

And they're not wrong, it is similar, according to the Goethels Bridge Replacement, said Program Director, James Blackmore who's been working on the project since 2002.

“When we started this project it was the only Cable Stay being designed but then the Tappan Zee started being designed, it's also a Cables Stay and the Kosciuszko Bridge is a Cable Stay Bridge,” James Blackmore, Program Director, Goethals bridge replacement.

There's a reason why the structure is so popular. Officials say the width of the lanes, and how much traffic it can carry, makes the Cable stay the most efficient bridge for the price.

“I don't really care, it's more about the convenience and being quicker on the weekends,”

No matter what your opinion is on how the Bridge looks, one thing is for sure, the name has been pronouncing the name wrong. Instead of GOTH-ULS. The bridge was actually named after George Washington GO-THELS.

“We have been told by the Goethals family that the family name is pronounced Goethals. Somebody from the family came up and corrected us so it's not just us it's everybody in the region that for whatever reason had fallen into calling it Goethals,” said James Blackmore, program director, Goethals bridge replacement.

But Port Authority officials say the name stuck.

So the work continues on the Goethals second span.

Eventually it will be one bridge with two spans side by side, with west and eastbound traffic traveling on each.

The entire 1.5 billion dollar project will be complete by mid 2018.
