JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- Jamestown resident Shawn Price has been on a mission since she recently purchased the old Crawford Furniture building on Winsor Street.

"My mission, your mission, our mission starts here," said Price.

She says she was looking to relocate her home daycare business, and bought the complex at an auction for $4,000 sight unseen.

"But then I looked at it, and I'm like, 'Oh my God, what did I get myself into?' I'm like 'Lord, I'm following you,'" said Price.

Price says the building needs an environmental cleanup, as well as top to bottom renovations, including a new roof. Part of the building collapsed in 2015. She actually worked for Crawford there as a sander, and is looking to turn it into a multi-purpose facility for the area.

"I've seen the struggle in kids and the families, things that go on, they also need an outlet," said Price.

Plans for that outlet include office space for new entrepreneurs, a taste of Chautauqua food court and a community center that includes daycare and after-school programs. The New York City native also wants to add a roller-skating rink, glow in the dark miniature golf and gymnasium to keep kids off the street.

"I've gone from group home to group home as a child. I've also lived on the street for a while. I know the things that kids can get into and what can approach them as well so they need to be diverted that directed into something more positive," said Price.

Scott Miller, of the Small Business Development Center at Jamestown Community College, which has served the business community at no cost for 25 years, has been helping Price develop a business plan.

"Feasibility of the project. What type of services could be offered there? I mean, it is a big project and it will certainly require quite a bit of funding," said Miller.

Funding, Price hopes, will come from the city, grants, private investment and community donations. She's also working with a contractor and has started a GoFundMe page, as well.

"But ultimately it's going to be up to us to make this happen. And as a community, between the heroin and the gun violence that has been going on recently, the community needs something," said Price.

Price plans to start the cleanup now and break ground next month.
