CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas -- Memorial Day weekend brings back devastating memories for some Central Texans as we approach the two-year anniversary of the major storm that flooded homes and claimed lives.
One Caldwell County resident is still waiting relief.
The damaged decked and broken branches are evidence of loss still lingering in Sharon Barta's backyard.
“Water came up from over the quarry and came over this way obviously and then it hit like just this side of the house, because it was leaning a little bit. This is a pop-up trailer that I bought after my husband died so I could do fun things with my son,” Barta said.
The trailer is one of many valuables the Memorial Day floods of 2015 destroyed, along with keepsakes kept in a shed behind the house.
“Things from my parents that I’ll never be able to recover, pictures, you know things that were more sentimental,” Barta said.
With the help of BR3T, the Blanco River Regional Recovery Team, Barta's foundation was reconstructed. But two years later, her living room is still shows damage, floors and walls are in desperate need of repair.
“It’s still a work in progress. I’m not the only one out there that’s battling, trying to complete and get some normality back in their life,” she said.
Despite the damage, Barta considers herself fortunate to connect with the community. The flood sparked widespread volunteer efforts to help.
“People’s hearts went out to their names and they banded together and we had lots of people come out and want to help,” said Thomas Monahan, executive director of the Blanco River Regional Recovery Team.
The recovery team has helped 1,000 families in Blanco, Hays, Caldwell, and Guadalupe counties. But the need still remains, BR3T has more than 200 open cases.
“There are still people out there trying to help them who aren't forgotten and who are working hard to make sure that they have peace of mind one day,” said Dezman Garner of the Blanco River Regional Recovery Team.
The non-profit is raising money until June for their long-term recovery efforts and the Rotary Club of San Marcos pledges to match the funds. To donate visit br3t.org.
