OAK ISLAND, N.C. -- Organizers of the Oak Island Lighthouse Run say a runner passed away during the event over the weekend.

According to a release posted on the event's Facebook, the cause of death isn't known.

The race includes a half-marathon, 5K, 1K and one-mile fun run.

Organizers released a statement saying they extend their deepest sympathies to the friends and family of the runner who passed away during Saturday's event.

They say their thoughts and prayers are also with fellow runners and numerous emergency personnel who were on scene attempting to assist the runner.

The runner's identity has not been released.
