PALMDALE, Calif. -- Palmdale School District is gearing up to open a new academy that aims to get every middle school student involved in STEM subjects.

In an effort to restructure Palmdale School District middle schools to include sixth through eighth grade students, a new school will open its doors. The Space and Aeronautics Gateway to Exploration Academy, or SAGE for short, will welcome students on 20th Street East and Avenue R.

“Our academy will focus on aerospace, space travel, and aviation,” said SAGE Academy Principal, Susan McDougal.

The school will offer three unique educational programs in Air Traffic Control, Rocketry, and Civil Air Patrol. It will focus on not just STEM, but STEAM subjects, standing for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The student will also be able to choose two electives.

“We’ll have robotics classes, LEGO robotics. We have a class about air traffic control. We have flight simulators for kids so they can learn to fly a plane, land a plane, and take off,” said McDougal.

Students will be zoned into SAGE. Elementary schools that will advance their students into the academy include Tamarisk and Tumbleweed Elementary Schools. Sage will officially open its doors for sixth-grade through 8th-grade students this coming August.
