Dozens of Austin area students are getting firsthand experience when it comes to mobile application development.

The students are given fictional conflicts and are tasked with creating an app that would help solve it.

The students participating are all students of color.

It's part of the Diversity Hackathon at Huston-Tillotson University.

The goal is to inspire minority youths to take the lead in the tech world.

"In the future I would like to become a mechanical engineer and the more experience and background that I have the better it is for my career and the easier for me to succeed," said LBJ High School Junior Ahkeem Sterling.

This is Diversity Hackathon's third year running at Huston-Tillotson.
