ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Tuesday is Safer Internet Day, a worldwide awareness-raising campaign to build a better internet for kids.

The Rochester City School District invited child safety experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to spend time talking to students about appropriate Internet use and what types of things to avoid doing online.

Some tips include avoiding inappropriate websites and photos, hate speech, violence and illegal or risky behaviors.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about Internet rules and to monitor their child's Internet use.

"At the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, our Netsmartz program, which is our Internet safety resource for kids, teens, parents and educators, we teach use of good 'netiquette' which means use good manners online," NCMEC Community Educator Debra Ortiz-Pardi said.

The city school district says it has a "safe search" program on all of its computers, laptops and tablets.
