VOORHEESVILLE, N.Y. -- Jamie Chismark and her daughter are behind an effort to turn the Voorheesville playground upsidedown.
"Lots of splinters, it's the number one complaint," said Chismark.
Last fall, Chiskmark's daughter, Ellie, told her principal the playground was falling apart.
"He said the playground was built in 1991, there are things that are no longer there, pieces are crumbling," said Chismark. "It's starting to become a safety concern."
From there, Chismark and school administrators formed a committee called the Friends of the Voorheesville Playground and launched a website. Realizing it would cost thousands of dollars to fix, and close to the cost of a new playground , fundraising efforts began last month.
"Progress that we've made thus far is pretty amazing," said Chismark. "I think we're going to hit our goal."
That goal? A brand new $200,000 playground with non-splinting wood, cargo nets, separate area for preschoolers and more.
"Climbing structures, way more swings, one very large swing that four to six kids can fit on and a zip line."
Their goal is to have it complete by sometime next year, with hopes to give the community something to smile about.
"This is such an awesome experience to be doing with my daughter who really started this whole thing," said Chismark. "We're going to do it together, we'll see it through the end and we're going to do it as a community. It will be phenomenal."
