CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte immigration groups along with the NAACP are calling on city leaders to protect residents against suspected ICE raids.

Emotions have been high this week in the immigrant community in Charlotte because ICE officials have been spotted conducting arrests.

News has spread quickly on social media which has prompted many to stay home and avoid anyone with a uniform.

Immigration officials said they haven't been conducting raids, instead just routine arrests of undocumented criminals. But Action NC says the infractions are minor and the arrests unnecessary and are now calling on city officials to help calm the immigrant community.

"Charlotte City Council, do the right thing to be brave, to be the shield that our community needs. When they took office they took an oath to represent all residents of Charlotte, not just some, but all," said Hector Vaca, Action NC.

On Thursday parents at Berryhill Academy were alarmed when an ICE arrest took place near the school.

The school principal sent out a message saying no ICE officers were at the school and they would have counselors on hand for the sensitive matter.
