Some Queens and Nassau commuters want to make a busy road safer, and they want the city to act before its too late.  NY1's Shannan Ferry filed the following report.

It's an accident waiting to happen. That's how many commuters we spoke with describe conditions on 39th Road.

It's where many enter and exit the Long Island Railroad Station in Little Neck. But, there's no north sidewalk forcing pedestrians to venture into the street.

"Cars are speeding, and it's very dangerous, somebody can get killed," said Little Neck resident Chrissy Papadatos.

There is a sidewalk on the south side, but not where some entrance points are located.

Commuter Joanna Stolove even started an online petition about the issue which has more than 150 signatures. Stolove said it's especially dangerous where the road curves near the Nassau/Queens border.

"If a car was coming close, you end up sort of moving to the side and walking in the brush, sometimes walking in mud, sometimes walking through snow, it's pretty bad," said Stolove.

But installing a sidewalk could come with some complications. The MTA said it would likely require removing trees and relocating utility poles, which would fall within the jurisdiction of the DOT.

However, they MTA said they share the community's concern for pedestrian safety.

"I hearing some positive feedback, but if you look right now if you look nothing has ever been done, so the time really is now," said City Councilman Paul Vallone.

A DOT spokesperson said due to the trees and width of 39th Road, they will not be able to build a sidewalk. The agency said they are however looking into alternative possibilities to enhance pedestrian safety.

Meantime, the MTA said they would support the establishment of a crosswalk at the location.
