SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- A local school district says a data breach is much bigger than it previously thought and thousands of its employees and students are affected.
The breach, which happened last August, affected the e-mail account of several Northside ISD employees. Investigators say the account contained personally identifiable information of thousands of NISD employees and students.
While they cannot prove or disprove that data was actually stolen during the hack, they are advising people to keep a close eye on their information.
"I don't know of any reason why, and I don't know that it was necessarily a target for NISD. I think there are just individuals out there who certainly don't have good intentions. I think this is an example of a scenario of individuals who have the ability and the know-how to get this type of information, this personal, identifiable information, and individuals can certainly use to for no good," said Barry Perez, with NISD.
The district sent out a letter on Dec. 30 to people who may be affected. That letter included specific enrollment information for a year of credit and identity monitoring. NISD is providing the monitoring at no cost.
