CORNING, N.Y. -- Construction workers are back on the site of Corning's highly anticipated Hilton Garden Inn.

It's been a long road filled with delays -- one roadblock lasting for almost two years.

"The DEC found what they call contamination and they had to remediate the site," said Corning Mayor Richard Negri.

City officials say they've been assurred those issues have been resolved.

"Were in good shape and work has started," said Negri. "We’re encouraged."

The $20 million project is expected to bring more than 40 permanent positions to the region, as well as 100 temporary construction jobs.

"It's a great investment," said Corning Planning & Economic Development Director Steve Dennis. "I think it demonstrates the developer's confidence in the city."

But the project isn't just bringing jobs: It's also bringing a solution.

"The hotel is needed because of the increase in visitors to the Corning Museum of Glass, and we’ve always had a shortage of good hotel rooms, so I think this will fill that gap," said Negri.

"We saw 460,000 visitors coming to the Corning Museum of Glass this past year, and having a new hotel in the area makes us an even more attractive destination," said CMOG Senior Director of Creative Strategy Rob Cassetti.

Those involved say having the hotel within walking distance of the city's major attraction is a game changer.

"To have one this close and this modern will really be a huge gain for the museum," said Cassetti.

Leaders say the hotel will be a major addition to Corning’s North Side area, too.

"The city has had a lot of success with Market Street, and this is an opportunity to work on the revitalization of Bridge Street," Dennis said.

The five-story building is expected to be complete by spring 2018.
