As people prepare to cook their Thanksgiving feasts, the FDNY is cautioning New Yorkers against unsafe kitchen practices.
The Fire Safety Unit handed out free oven mitts and information pamphlets inside the Western Beef on Forest Avenue
They say people should never leaving the stove unattended and should keep lids nearby to smother flames.
They also say to use water to cool burns, not to extinguish fires.
"With the holidays, there are much more people that are cooking for Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and, you know, people who may not cook all year round do some how come about and start cooking on these holidays and if you're not doing it all the time, sometimes these basic things are forgotten," said Firefighter George Tabeek.
