WILMINGTON -- A UNC-Wilmington junior said she’s being harassed and cyberbullied by a criminology professor. The student posted a controversial Facebook post months ago about President-elect Donald Trump saying, quote, "y’all are not prepared for what I’m about to do.”

She said the post was not supposed to be threatening and the secret service cleared her of any wrongdoing.

But now, a tenured professor is standing by his article he wrote in response that questions the student's religion and sexuality. Dr. Mike Adams wrote an article titled “A Queer Muslim Jihad?” In it he says “her claims to be a “queer Muslim” are probably part of an act designed to fit into as many victim categories as humanly possible. Sometime I wonder whether LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Thespian. So much drama, so few letters in the alphabet.”

Since the post, 20-year-old Nada Merghani said she has received death threats from people on the Internet. She feels unsafe on the campus and will be transferring schools soon.

"I have to go because someone is calling for me to be deported on Twitter and some are comparing me to ISIS and sending his followers after me saying kill all Muslims," said Nada Merghani, UNCW student.

This isn't the first time Dr. Adams has found himself in the middle of a controversy. The criminal justice professor filed a lawsuit against UNCW in 2007 and won, claiming he was denied a promotion due to his conservative political and religious beliefs. We reached out to Mike Adams and have not heard back yet.

The university also recently released an official statement on the matter:

"The university has thoroughly reviewed the situation related to a UNCW student and Dr. Mike Adams, a professor of criminology. Dr. Adams’s online column and social media presence represent his personal expressions and opinions on a variety of topics. These expressions and opinions are neither within the requested scope of Dr. Adams’s duties with the university, nor do they represent the views of this institution. However, they are expressions protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

At this point, the university has not found evidence that Dr. Adams has improperly released any private or confidential information related to the student, or violated the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). There is no evidence of unlawful discrimination by Dr. Adams toward this student in UNCW’s working, living, or learning environment, per the university’s harassment prevention policy. Finally, Dr. Adams’s conduct and written material do not contain any evidence of a true threat toward this or any other student.

The university has consistently worked with this student for some time to address the student’s concerns. We have advised that the student, like any UNCW student, may utilize university procedures and policies to raise issues or complaints related to discrimination, harassment, and/or possible threats. UNCW remains committed to our long-held values of freedom of expression, inclusiveness, and treating our fellow Seahawks with respect and dignity."

Time Warner Cable News reporter Brandon Shope sat down with the student and has the story from the campus of UNCW.
