CHARLOTTE -- Two 18-year-olds and a 15-year-old are accused of beating a transgender woman with a hatchet in Charlotte last week.
Dajion Tanner and Destiny Dagraca are behind bars, held under a $275,000 bond each.
They're charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Police say they attacked a 24-year-old transgender woman at Clanton Road District Park, stabbing her with a hatchet.
Officers say they are still investigating and the FBI is monitoring the case, as advocates call the attack a hate crime.
"Incredibly concerned, and not just for her safety, but for the safety of others in our community. I think that right now more than ever that discrimination in our state and our community do exist," says Matt Hirschy of Equality NC.
This week the FBI released its 2015 hate crime data which show an 8 percent increase, in incidents based on gender identity, from 2014 to 2015.
The stats do not include this year, when HB2 was part of the national conversation.
Advocates fear that law, and rhetoric during the presidential campaign, could contribute to another increase in attacks on transgender people.
