GOLDSBORO -- Officials say several inmates became disruptive and assaulted a staff member, as well as other inmates, late Sunday afternoon.

2 fires were started on the property in Wayne County, one inside the prison's diagnostic building and another that destroyed a storage shed which held supplies. Officials moved about 500 hundred inmates from the Neuse Correctional Institution after the disturbance was under control. It took law enforcement about 4 hours to get the prison under control, explaining that the minimum security prison is set up like dormortories instead of individual cells and it takes time to go through each one.

1 inmate and 1 correctional staff member were injured during the disturbance, both were treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening innjuries. Officals say they are still assessing damage which includes broken windows, and are investigating the cause of the disturbance.

There's still no word on when they'll move inmates back into the correctional institution.
