CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Cortland is working on making its playgrounds safer and more accesible for kids.

Following the addition of a new playground in Dexter Park, the city is now updating the rest of the 20 to 30-year-old parks.

Some of the additions include a splash pad in Dexter Park, a new rocketship and slide in Beaudry Park and handicap accessible equipment in Sugget Park.

Cortland Mayor Brian Tobin says the goal of the project is to create a nice place for families to go.

"Having parks, having an attractive main street, gathering places where people can congregate, people can get together and have the opportunity to socialize, that's part of a neighborhood, part of a community," Tobin said.

The improvements are expected to be completed in 2017.
