The Staten Island Heart Society has received $2500 to fund more CPR training in the borough.

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis granted the money in honor of "Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness" month.

She says every year, more people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest than some cancers or AIDS.

Nearly 95% die because they don't get CPR within five minutes.

She and the Heart Society are hosting a free two hour basic CPR class this Saturday.

"It's so important for us to get trained. Only 3% of Americans get trained annually in CPR. We want to increase that number right here in our community because the likelihood is the life we're going to save is going to be that of a loved one," said Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis.

"We really really want as many people to know CPR, as many AEDs to be in the community as possible," said Rachel Volpe of the Staten Island Heart Society.

Saturday's class will take place  at the "Monsignor Murphy Center" at St. Clare's.

Space for the free class is limited.
