AURORA, N.Y. -- An invasive weed first discovered in Cayuga Lake in 2011 has been found at another location 25 miles north of the first location.

During an educational exercise with Wells College students, the weed known as hydrilla was discovered last month.

The first discovery in Ithaca was treated successfully with herbicides. But experts say they're not sure if that is the best way to combat the latest infestation. For now they are asking for help collecting samples during upcoming hydrilla hunts.

They hope to study those samples before next summer.

"We need to have a plan in place as to how we're going to manage it.  And we don't know how we're going to do that quite yet.  We need to know the extent of it and what kind of treatment options we've got," said Hilary Lamber Executive Director of the Cayuga Lake Watershed.

The two hydrilla hunts are scehduled for this Wednesday and next Thursday.
