Staten Island Ferry riders may not be able to charge their cell phones on the boat, but they can now plug in at the terminal.

The Department of Transportation unveiled new charging booths Wednesday at both the Saint George and Whitehall terminals.

This after the agency cut power to outlets on the boats in July because of fights between riders.

Officials say its important to provide the service to passengers so they can reach people when they exit the boat.

"A lot of our ferry riders will come off the ferry and they want to call their wives and their loved ones and let them know their on their way home. Anything that we can do to ease their trip we're willing to do," said Tom Cocola of the Department of Transportation.

"We've tried to provide them with some amenities that get them more into the 21st century," said Jim DeSimone of the DOT.

Transportation officials say they are working on getting charging stations onto the ferries themselves, but they aren't sure when.
