John Allegro did not win the Republican primary in the 98th Assembly District Tuesday night. He lost to current Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, who was behind for hours Tuesday until about 11 p.m., when a new block of votes came in.

"We won the primary by a margin of 60 to 40 percent outside of Kiryas Joel. Kiryas Joel awarded him this primary by giving him 1,300 votes to my 19,” said Allegro.

But Allegro said he will continue to fight for the United Monroe line, which he said Brabenec stole.

"We have a court day on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Albany, and we fully expect to have his entire petition wiped out and removed," said Allegro. "We expect him to be removed from the independent line and we're going to recapture our name, United Monroe."

Brabenec and Allegro both expect to face Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder in the general election. Tuesday night, Brabenec called on Allegro to drop out of the race, "which will definitely unify the Republican Party, will unify our district and will help us out to be successful in November,” he said.

Brabenec said that, like Allegro, he opposes the annexation of 164 acres of the Town of Monroe by Kiryas Joel, although he said he wants to try to find solutions that will work for everyone. The annexation issue is also the subject of a court fight.

Meanwhile, Wieder, who won the Democrat and Independent lines, said he’s the best person to represent the district and bring unity to the Town of Monroe.

“I think the first thing someone has to be is to be sincere and speak to every single resident that they get a chance to. Try to work with people,” said Wieder.

As for Allegro, he said he will not let Brabenec’s threat of a Wieder win keep him from running for assembly.

"He called for people from other parties to come to his side. I’m calling for people from other parties to come to my side and vote for the one candidate who is not beholden to the leaders of Kiryas Joel,” Allegro said.
