OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The video above features underwater footgage taken last month that shows a ship that sank during a storm in 1803.
A team of underwater explorers says it found the wreck of "The Washington" in deep water off Oswego earlier this summer.
"There are a bunch of high fives that go, fives that happen right after that," shipwreck explorer Jim Kennard said.
The underwater explorers say shipwreck historians confirmed it is the sloop Washington, a 53-foot-long ship, that was enroute from Kinsgton, Ontario to Niagara, Ontario with a full cargo and five passengers. The vessel got caught in a powerful storm and sank. It was the oldest commercial sailing ship that's been found in the Great Lakes.
"It's a piece of history," Kennard said. "It's writing the final chapter of a ships history and bringing back those images so now today and on your newscast that people can see just what that ship was like."
The team will not disclose the exact location off Oswego, or just how deep down the wreck is. Kennard did say its in the best spot, where it can be preserved.
"The best we can do to share with the public is doing just what we're doing, is bring the pictures up, bring the video up, bring that information up," he said.
Kennard estimates there are at least 200 wrecks in Lake Ontario, and as long as there are more ships, there are more stories.
"I sometimes wonder if this is going to be the pinnacle of our success, but there's always something else out there," Kennard said.
