OWEGO, N.Y. -- There is uncertainty for the future of the Owego Police Department after the village oard voted to move forward with a grant proposal dissolving the police department.

The vote comes just a few weeks after the board voted on a fiscal budget eliminating two officer positions.

Board members proposed the idea of moving Owego officers to the Tioga County Sheriff's Department.

Some residents supported the decision saying it would lower financial stress to the village, but opponents argue that it puts the area at a security risk.

They say discussions leading up to the proposal should have included more residents.

"I'm just disappointed," Karen Vinti said. "I'm really disappointed with the simple fact that a lot of this happened without any consultation with me, as the police chief. I'm not exactly sure where these decisions are coming from."

The board made edits to the proposal during Tuesday's meeting.

The grant still has to be approved by the Tioga County Public Safety Committee before the process can move forward.
