MECKELENBURG COUNTY -- Mecklenburg County has eight reported cases of the Zika virus, all among people who traveled outside the area.

North Carolina received more than $800,000 from the CDC to fight the spread of the virus. The money can go to survelliance, investigation, mosquito control, among other efforts.

"There's nothing really in Mecklenburg County or here in the United States that will indicate local transmission among the population we have here,"  said James Bjornebae, Mecklenburg County Environmental Health.

Tega Cay, South Carolina officials sprayed areas Thursday night, after a reporting a case of travel-related Zika.  In Mecklenburg County, environmental health says it has seen a spike in mosquito calls this year. "There's nothing really in mecklenburg county or here in the United States that will indicate local transmission among the population we have here," said Bjornebae.

The department has more than 1,200 sites throughout the county they visit in the summer.
