ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A community came together to remember the life of George Herring on Saturday with the completion of a park built in his honor.

On what would have been Herring's 18th birthday, family and friends gathered in the newly finished memorial park. Just a few feet away from where Herring was stabbed and killed a year ago, the vacant lot was transformed into a garden with flowers and vegetables.

Organizer George Bauerschmidt says he wants the park to be a reminder for generations to come.

"I just hope that years from now as kids see this and they get older, especially the ones working on it now, when they're 20, 25, 30 years old and they bring their kids here and they say this is not only a place that I helped build but this is a reminder of what we don't want to see happen on the Glenwood Avenue area," said Bauerschmidt.

Two people were arrested and charged with Herring's death.
