CHARLOTTE -- A Charlotte man shared his thoughts on last week's shootings, but in a bit of a different perspective.

Not only is Garrick McFadden a young, black man, he's also the son of well-known Homicide Detective Garry McFadden.

From a young age, Garrick was taught not to fear law enforcement, but after two black men were shot and killed by police officers in Baton Rouge and Minneapolis and five police officers were killed in the attack in Dallas, Garrick found himself in the middle trying to bridge the gap.

"I can't speak for every police department in America, I can't speak for every police officer. But, the message I can say universally, is do not allow one situation, because of a skin color and a uniform, to dictate everybody of that one race or that one person. Because what that does is creates more bridges being burned, that creates more tension," he said.

Garry McFadden, Garrick's dad, spent 30 years as a detective with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and 20 years in the homicide unit.
