NATIONWIDE -- According to a recently released Forbes list, James Goodnight is Raleigh’s richest resident and former UNC system president Clemmie Spangler Jr. is Charlotte’s wealthiest.

The list ranks the richest person in America’s 50 largest cities.

Goodnight co-founded business analytics software company SAS Institute in 1976 and owns two-thirds of the company. His net worth, according to Forbes, is $8.4 billion.

Spangler is the current owner of drywall manufacturer National Gypsum. He also ran his dad’s construction company, rescued his dad’s company, Bank of North Carolina, and built the Golden Eagle Motel chain. He also served as the UNC system president from 1986 to 1997. His net worth is $2.5 billion.

No surprise, Seattle resident Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, topped the list with a net worth of $77.2 billion.

He is followed by Larry Ellison, co-founder of computer technology company Oracle, with a net worth of $43.8 billion, and Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, with a net worth of $42.6 billion.
