BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Broome County Sheriff's Office is welcoming more than a dozen new faces into one of its most important divisions.

16 officers from four different agencies graduated from the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Academy Friday.

Graduates went through weeks of rigorous training, which included both physical and mental testing.

During the ceremony, current corrections officers called the position a thankless job that sometimes goes unnoticed.

Those who earned that position yesterday say they're happy to see all of their hard work finally paying off.

"It feels good," graduate James Ellis said. "It's been a long nine weeks. We've learned a lot, did a lot. I worked in the jail before the academy started and I think that the academy has just built me to be a better officer for when I return."

The Broome County Sheriff's Corrections Division operates a 536 bed direct supervision facility.
