A Richmond Hill elementary school gets straight A's in emergency preparedness.
The Office of Emergency Management gave P.S. 90 Horace Mann School the 'Ready School of the Year Award' Thursday.
It's part of the Office of Emergency Management's "Ready New York" program. The goal is to prepare kids to handle emergency events like natural disasters and fires.
To win the award, third grade students made posters to hang around the school and performed a skit.
First and second graders wrote a song about being prepared.
"When they know what to do in an emergency, it helps children feel calm. So there's no one worried about what would I do if I have an emergency. They've already thought about the steps beforehand," said Adrienne Ubertini with P.S 90, Horace Mann.
"They were selected because they're energetic and ready to go. And the teachers were very engaged and made sure they took preparedness very seriously. Not only here, but at home," said Calvin Drayton with the NYC Office of Emergency Management.
This is the third year P.S. 90 participated in the 'Ready Schools Intiative.'
