WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Fishing at Salem Lake has been a tradition for the Wilkins family. It’s now David Wilkins turn to pass it down in the family.

"My Dad took me here many years ago,” said Wilkins. “It’s been a tradition; I've got my grandson and son here just enjoying the day.”

However, they'll have to find a new spot to cast off. The pier and most of the lake will be closed as the city prepares to give the marina area $4 million face lift.

"They're going to redo the entire parking area of the facility,” said City of Winston-Salem Spokesman, Dick Butler. “We're going to move our picnic shelter, playground over and add more bathrooms."

The city will not issue fishing licenses because the bait shop will be closed. Also, boat launch ramps will be under construction.

"It’s going to take close to a year to 14,” said Butler. “15 months to get everything completed."

Fishing will be allowed along designated shoreline areas, but you'll want to get there early as parking will be reduced from more than 200 spaces to 25 spots.

"Public, please be patient, we will get there and we're really excited about this project,” said Butler.

As for the Wilkins family, they don't mind the temporary closing if it means some beautification along the lake.

"Walk around the lake and fish,” explained Wilkins. “It's been off limits until now. Since they're doing the renovations, I think there's a bunch of good spots you can get to."
