DAVIDSON -- After years of pleading from neighbors, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will lower the speeds in Davidson.

“Well we're grateful for the outcome of Tuesday night's meeting to lower the speed, we're frustrated it took so long,” said Vallee Bubak, Davidson resident.

Transportation crews will lower the speed limit by ten miles an hour along portions of Davidson-Concord Road. But some residents say more work needs to be done.

“Because you can lower the speed limit to 35 but doesn't mean that people will obey those speed limits,” said Bubak.

Some residents still have concerns about the busy intersection of Robert Walker Drive and Davidson-Concord Road. Currently, it's a two way stop with a blinking crosswalk.

“Right now, today we need a roundabout and we don't want to wait three years, we don’t want to for a development to come in and our safety hinge on future development,” said Bubak.

Davidson Mayor John Woods agrees. He said pushing for a roundabout is a priority for Davison's Board of Commissioners.

“Because that does immediately slow traffic, I mean you can’t do a roundabout at fast speeds, certainly not safely,” said Mayor Woods.

He said he also believes safety is a two way street and it'll take everyone working together to keep the roadways safe.

"I think we've got to always focus on driver awareness and pedestrian awareness to be certain that we're all safe,” Mayor Woods said.

NCDOT is also making changes to the timing of three crosswalk signals along Highway 115. Starting this week, the "walk" signal will be displayed three seconds earlier giving pedestrians more time to establish their presence in the crosswalk.
