AUSTIN—Hillary Clinton says she could win Texas.

The presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee told New York Magazine that if enough black and Latino voters turn out then she could break the state's longstanding Republican stronghold.

Clinton said she could break what's been a lengthy Republican run in the Lone Star State. She beat Barack Obama in the Texas Primary back in 2008 and fared well here against Bernie Sanders on Super Tuesday.

"She beat Sanders 65 to 35. She does very well in small town Texas,” said former Texas Land Commissioner Garry Mauro.

Mauro is the chairman of Texans for Hillary. He says Clinton does well with groups of people the likely GOP Presidential nominee does not.

"It's very simple. If you look at any poll anywhere in America and Trump is doing very well with the white males. If Hillary can continue to carry African Americans overwhelmingly and Hispanics overwhelmingly and women overwhelmingly, there's not enough white males around,” he said.

But could she actually get enough people to go to the polls here this November?

"I think it's strange credulity to make a prediction that Texas could be competitive in November, there's just no evidence of that," said Republican Strategist Matt Mackowiak.

Mackowiak points to Republican Governor Greg Abbott's near 20 point victory over Democrat Wendy Davis back in 2014. He says it's just one of the reasons why there's no sign of Texas turning into a battleground state anytime soon.

"So it's hard for me to see how the Democrats are going to put a serious effort together in Texas in November. I mean, that would probably require $20 million dollars, lots of time spent campaigning in Texas,” said Mackowiak.

Democrats haven't won a statewide election since 1994. The last time they voted for a Democratic President was in 1976 when Jimmy Carter won the White House.
