WEBSTER, N.Y. -- Saying goodbye is never easy. For Matt Fletcher, pastor and teacher for Webster Christian School, it's a lesson in heartbreak.
"I understand the parental perspective, I feel it, but it really would take a miracle," Fletcher said.
After 39 years of teaching children K-12, the school plans to close its doors due to financial hardship and low enrollment.
"There's that tension between having great faith in what god can do, and also being foolhardy," Fletcher said.
While the enrollment at Webster Christian Church has been in decline for the past several years, they've always been able to make due, but this year, with registration the lowest it's been in the school's history, officials pray for a miracle.
"My grandparents and my parents went here, and I really like the teachers here, they're nice," 9-year-old Michael Carew said.
However, some parents aren't giving up. Douglas Hathaway set up a GoFundMePage to raise $250,000 in hopes of keeping the school open.
"And I'm going to fight for it, I can't look myself in the mirror and say I didn't do everything I could to save that for other children, and for the teacher's jobs that have sacrificed so much," Hathaway said.
Wednesday evening the Church elders will be meeting with parents to discuss the financial details of the church closing, and to perhaps find a way to keep the faith and love for their private education alive, for generations to come.
