AUSTIN, Texas — A child was hit and killed by a car on West Anderson Lane Friday afternoon.

It happened about a quarter of a mile from Wooten Elementary School.

The boy was pronounced dead on scene, family members identified him as Uriel Garcia.Authorities said the child was just picked up from school. After the child's mother parked her car and got out, the child ran across the street and was hit by a van. The driver of the van stopped immediately after hitting the child and when police arrived on scene he told investigators he never saw the child.

No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of that van.

"They already let him go because there weren't any charges. How are there not any charges if a child died," said Hermalinda Gonzales, Victim's Aunt.

Austin police say parents need to always supervise their children, especially on busy streets.

"You need to make sure and stop, look both ways. Parents need to make sure to keep their kids next to them. Don't let your child run out, away from you," said Corp. Chad Martinka, of the Austin Police Department.

Authorities believe the driver was not going over the speed limit when he hit the boy.
