SAN ANTONIO -- Everything is just about back to normal on Lackland Air Force Base Medina Training Annex, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions.
“This morning we received one of those calls that you never want to receive,” said Brig. Gen. Bob LaBrutta, Commander, 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio.
Shortly after the sun came up, reports of an active shooter cast a shadow over the Annex. Within three minutes, the bases and schools across the street were on lockdown.
Investigators made their way to Forbes Hall, a facility that supports battlefield training.
“Within eight minutes, they located two potential victims on the first floor,” said Lt. Col. Robert Ford.
They found two guns and two men dead in an apparent murder-suicide. According to a senior US official, the gunman was an airman who targeted his Commander.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that are going to be affected by this tragedy,” LaBrutta said.
Now investigators are collecting evidence to find out why and how it started.
“I will tell you that we’ve got safety security asset protection across Joint Base San Antonio so those that live, work, and play in Joint Base San Antonio, they can take confidence that we’re good to go with this situation,” said LaBrutta.
