IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. -- Sears department store, the last business remaining at the former Medley Centre in Irondequoit, is closing up shop by July.
Sears Holdings announced on Thursday the closure of that and the K-Mart on West Ridge Road in Greece.
The closings are part of a larger nationwide closure. The company said that eligible employees impacted by the moves will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Kmart or Sears stores.
The Medley Center was sold at auction back in January to local developer Angelo Ingrassia.
Irondequoit Town Supervisor David Seeley says he's confident the Sears building will be incorporated into redevelopment plans for the site.
"I have asked the new owner to, in the near future, speak directly to the people of Irondequoit to affirm his commitment to redeveloping this site, something he's agreed to do," said Seeley.
