SAN ANTONIO -- Google Fiber has started its massive fiber rollout in San Antonio. But if the rollout in Austin is any indication of how it will go, expect the process to take years.
The company has finished its design phase.
Now comes the hard part: Laying down about 4,000 miles of fiber-optic cabling.
Right now, there are only four cities with Google Fiber.
San Antonio is one of seven other cities that hopes to come online soon.
Google Fiber was announced for Austin in 2013, but two-and-a-half years later cables have only been run to a small part of the city.
Google Fiber famously claims to offer internet speeds of a gigabyte a second.
AT&T and Time Warner Cable -- our parent company -- have also boosted internet speeds in response.
