Staten Island's largest nonprofit recognized its volunteers at an event on Thursday.
Staten Island University Hospital hosted its annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon at the Excelsior Grand.
Hundreds of Island residents were recognized for their continuing dedication to the hospital and its patients.
SIUH staff say volunteers are a critical part of the hospital's day-to-day operations.
"The hours that they worked this year in 2015 [was] 89,000 hours. It would take a full-time employee 41 years to accumulate 89,000 hours, so that says a lot," said Toni Arcamone of SIUH Volunteer Services.
"It's a pat on the back. I'm sure everybody in here will do it whether you know there was some compensation or not but it’s a nice touch that's for sure," said volunteer Katherine Corso.
The hospital honored more than 585 volunteers at this year's ceremony.
