With the snip of scissors, Albany students cut out their place in pharmacological history.

This is the first of its kind in New York: a student-operated pharmacy now open in Schenectady.

"As students, we usually learn pharmacy through a textbook, but it's really nice to go into the community and really get our practice in and really see how what we're learning affects people's lives and changes them for the better," said Albany College of Pharmacy student Chukwuma Onumonu.

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences introduced 'College Hometown Pharmacy,' located at Hometown Health Center, a non-profit care provider. The facility is staffed by a full-time, licensed pharmacist, as well as students completing their degrees.

"As pharmacy students and as future pharmacists, that's what we're looking to do is to serve people who don't have readily available access to healthcare," student Odiri Duru said.

Students say not only will this opportunity provide invaluable real life experience, but it will also be beneficial to the surrounding community.

"They're going to get friendly, helpful, intelligent, ready-to-go, I've-got-a-smile-on-my-face type pharmacy students ready to serve you," Duru said.
