ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. --  Saturday was the final day for shoppers like Colleen Daddarrio to come here to Macy's at Eastern Hills Mall.

"It's kind of a shame, you know," said Daddarrio. "This store brought in a lot of customers to the Eastern Hills Mall, especially as one of its staple stores. So it's going to a hurt business a lot here. I didn't know it was it that much trouble, you know. We come her quite a bit and we're going to be sad to see it go."

Last year Macy's announced a restructuring plan that called for closing 36 stores nationwide. In all about 3,000 store associates would be affected.

Three of those stores are right here in Western New York: Eastern Hills Mall, and two at McKinley Mall including its home store. Locally about 160 employees were facing layoffs.

At the McKinley Mall store there are very few employees left, there are actually more customers inside, picking through the last bits of merchandise, than there are employees.

Less than ten of the employees here will be transferred to other stores, meaning Galleria or the Boulevard Mall. The rest of the the employees here will either be out of work or have to look for a job.

And it's the same story at the Eastern Hills Mall store, only a few workers will be heading to the remaining two stores.

The closings follow a disappointing holiday shopping season. Macy's sales last November and December fell near five percent compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, many are wondering what impact the closings could have on these malls.

"It's definitely going to hurt the business and the economy here being one of the anchor stores," said Daddarrio. "I don't know what that's going to do to the other local businesses here, I know they have a lot of empty shops here in the Eastern Hills Mall, so hopefully it doesn't hurt that much and hopefully they can get someone in.".

We reached out to the management of both malls, but so far haven't heard back.
