It's the end of an era in SoHo for The Magic Shop studio.

Wednesday was the last day of recording at the famed studio space on Crosby Street, which is slated to close by the end of the month.

The shop is closing due to rising rent costs.

Founder and owner Steve Rosenthal opened the studio opened back in 1988. He's worked with numerous artists, including Joey Ramone, the Counting Crows and Norah Jones. David Bowie also recorded his final album at the Magic Shop before he died.

Rosenthal says it's hard for him to imagine not being there after so many years.

"You might see me wandeing the streets of New York. I'll be that guy with a little cassette recorder, recording people's stories about New York City," he said. "The ironic thing is that, you know, as an urban pioneer, you help transform the neighborhood, and then usually, you get booted out."

Rosenthal says he plans to continue preserving and remastering older music at a new location.
