You can now get up-to-the-second updates on Twitter about fires and emergencies in the five boroughs, straight from the fire department.

@FDNYAlerts will send out automated updates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is not meant to replace 911 calls, so you can't tweet the account to report an emergency.

You can still follow the department's original handle, @FDNY, for information about events and fire safety.
