CLEMMONS -- The Florida-based supermarket chain, Publix, announced it is coming to Clemmons. The grocer said it's going to open a 49,000 square foot store on the southwest corner of Lewisville-Clemmons Road and Peace Haven Road.

"We couldn't be more excited,” said Publix Super Market Manager of Media and Community Relations Kim Reynolds. “It's a growing area, it's a great place to live, and we know it will be a great area for us."

Rezoning of the underlying land for the development, along with the site plan, was unanimously approved by the Clemmons Village Council.

"With a thoroughfare like Lewsiville-Clemmons Road you have about 40,000 cars passing by a day which makes that an incredibly convenient store location to have, but also competitive for Publix," said Village of Clemmons Mayor Nick Nelson.

The Clemmons store is just one of 18 sites planned for the company in North Carolina over the next two years.

"We're excited to bring Publix's quality products and premiere service to the area," said Reynolds.

However not all Clemmons residents were on board with the idea of another grocery store in their 12 square mile village.

"I think the hesitation is traffic, and it's up to the municipality to handle that,” said Nelson. “I think we're headed there and it's something we need to be very aware of."

Once that was made public knowledge, more people approved.

“The residents actually right next to the site were really responsive,” said Nelson. “They’re now excited about the idea of being able to walk not only to the Jerry Long YMCA, but the store and places like Panera Bread."

Publix said one to two months prior to the grand opening the company will host job fairs.

They plan to hire around 100 local employees.
