GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- A Guilderland family moved into their new home after they lost everything in a fire a few weeks ago that put some members in the hospital.

"We've been collecting goods at the firehouse, but what the family needs today is manpower, elbow grease," said Mark Malone with the McKownville Fire Department.

From fighting flames and saving lives to carrying couches and moving mattresses, these firefighters do it all.

"I think there's a thread of that in all of the volunteer fire departments around here, that sense of giving back to the community, we're very much part of the community," said Malone.

"Without everybody's help, I don't think I would be standing right here right now," said Amanda Sawyer.

Two weeks ago, Sawyer's Guilderland home went up in flames. She wasn't home at the time, but several of her relatives were. Sawyer said her mother is still in the hospital, and her two young sons were recently released from the burn unit.

"I've actually lost a lot of people in my life and to lose another person, especially a child, a child can't go before their parent," she said.

As a father of two, firefighter Malone said her story hits home.

"I think it's traumatic for any parent who was on that fire scene that night and witnessed what was going on, so I hope this is part of a good recovery process here, at least we can give some help and get the boys settled into their new house," he said.

Malone and his two sons, along with other volunteers, helped move Sawyer and her boys into a new home Sunday for a fresh start.

"Clearly I have enough people standing behind me that will pick me up and bring my family and I back to our feet," said Sawyer.

So far, the response to help the family has been so huge the McKownville Fire Department can't handle all the donations.
