PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- It happens only once every four years; a Leap Year, an extra day to make 366 this year. For people born on February 29, it's a chance to celebrate their actual birthday.
Four years ago, we met new parents, Todd and Beth Farrar, and their Leap Year baby, Ethan. He was born Feb 29, 2012. So, for the first time, he's celebrating his birthday on his actual birthday. The chances of being born on this day are about one in 1,400.
"It's a special birthday for special little boy, to go from that little baby in the hospital to a walking, talking little boy that he is now. He wasn't due on Feb 29 but that is when he decided to show up," said Beth.
The biggest challenge for Farrar's parents so far has been in non-leap years and figuring out a date to celebrate.
"I think we have been doing it the end of Feb 28, We try to stick it to the same month even though you could make the argument that March 1st is technincally that day," said Beth.
A leap year contains one additional day to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year. Without leap years, the calendar would be off by 25 days.
Ethan's first official leapling birthday, has been more like a week-long celebration. He went to Disney, met his hero Buzz Lightyear and discovered Star Wars.
"His name is Kylo Ren and his mom and dad is Princess Leia and Han Solo," said Ethan.
Monday, the Ferrar family is planning on getting together with family to celebrate with Ethan's favorite birthday treat, vanilla cupcakes.
