Central Health opened its Southeast Community Health and Wellness Center on Saturday.

The 74,000 square foot facility offers primary care, same-day appointments and dental services. It also has a teaching kitchen where people can learn how to cook healthy meals and a fitness studio.

Austinite David Hart says facilities like this helped him get healthy before he had insurance.

"These are people who largely have jobs, but minimum wage jobs and maybe not 40 hours a week.  They can't spend a lot of their income on healthcare,” said Hart.

Doctors hope the clinic’s team approach on whole wellness helps them build strong relationships with their patients.

"Trust is a really big issue. When you have a relationship, it's easier to discuss your concerns,” said Family Physician Dr. Edwin Melendez.

The new facility will also be a place where Dell Medical School students have their residencies.
