A barbershop and clothing company is opening up shop in an unlikely location. NY1's Clodagh McGowan takes us inside.

A person might be surprised to see a barber's pole outside of an automotive shop on Queens Boulevard.

However, inside Queens Finest Barbershop, customers are getting the five star treatment.

"It's something different, crazy different and it's working," said Mikki Azarcon, the owner of Queens Finest Barbershop & Apparel.

"Crazy different" is working for Azarcon.

He's the brains behind the Queens Finest brand which goes beyond hair cuts; it also includes a clothing line that pays homage to the borough.

"I wanted to be that guy to keep Queens on the map. I wanted to be that guy and thank God for my customers because they help, they love it," said Azarcon.

His customers have been spotted wearing the shirts all over the map.

"I love hearing those stories! Anywhere, like they'll be in Florida, Miami or Vegas, Alaska even I heard it happened. Like people will see the shirt and you know, the head nod. That's what it's all about," said Azarcon.

"It's kind of how you know that your friend gets his haircut at Queens Finest. You see his Queens Finest t-shirt and you know he's been in here before," said Matt Caputo, who travels from Williamsburg to get his haircut.

Azarcon started cutting hair in his mom's basement in Woodside. Twenty-five years later, many of his original customers are still coming back.

"I had the pleasure of getting those $5 cuts, you know! It was the best, you know, walking down those stairs. It's been family since then," said Stephen Rueda, who travels from Lynbrook to get his haircut.

Azarcon's staff is like family too. They're all from Queens and started out as his clients.

"He took me right under his wings, he was just real cool with everything and I learned how to cut hair from him," said barber Marcos Heleno.

"The way I started was pretty much I asked Mikki for an opportunity when I was in high school, so I was cutting class pretty much to go to the shop and cut hair," said barber Santiago Morales.

Azarcan just opened the new location on Queens Blvd. and Hillyer Street in Elmhurst a month ago. He shut down his old shop in Woodside after 15 years of business because the landlord wanted to go in a new direction.
